My sister and SN at the point where we had a view and decided to turn back.
If you look up directions on Google maps to St. Mary's Falls, it will take you some way that takes an hour and 18 minutes. I did this one day when I couldn't remember how to get to the Gold Camp Road 4-way, and my sister and her friend JB were visiting, and SN was along. I didn't want to get us lost/waste time (which by choosing the option I did, I did), so I used Google maps instead of following the Atlas map. BAD CHOICE!
Well, apparently Old Stage Road had opened by Nov 9 (see http://www.csindy.com/IndyBlog/archives/2014/09/13/hiking-along-old-stage-road) -it had been closed due to floods since I got to the Springs, and so this added to the confusion. My guess is we went up Cheyenne Boulevard and went on to Old Stage Road. At this point, as we were rumbling up the washboards and potholes uphill, my gas tank, which I swore was at half when we started, tipped into the empty range. So we decided to give up on St. Mary's Falls (this was one of the 6 tries it took me to get there!) and find a random hike along Old Stage Road (see following photos for accompanying facial expressions).
I am pretty sure we stopped by the sign that says some stuff about National Forest land, and then parked there. This is right across the street from the Stables at Broadmoor. I remember my sister wanted to check out the riding situation there. There is a road that heads up past the Stables, we hiked up that onto what I remember was either a private or abandoned road. We hiked till we got a view, then turned back. It was very easy.
Deciding where to go
I used Google maps directions, my sister's description of "Cheyenne Canyon" on Facebook, the date (after Old Stage Road opened) and this photo to determine we were, in fact, somewhere off Old Stage Road.
